Team building improves overall work environment

In 2002, a large U.S. Government agency conducted an agency-wide survey to measure the safety culture and climate of the organization. The results indicated that one of the agency’s offices had significantly negative results compared to the rest of the agency in four specific areas: management leadership, communication, empowerment, quality focus and supervision.

In response to these results Action Groups were created to develop recommended follow-up actions. The follow-up actions were implemented in early 2004 and progress in the four areas was measured again in August 2004. The results of the second measurement indicated further work was necessary to attain progress in improving the workplace. Team building was also identified at this time as the critical area that would be the immediate focus of improvement efforts.

In March 2005, Gantz Wiley Research was commissioned to provide consultation, analytical, team building, and facilitation services for the office. Gantz Wiley Research worked with the office to develop a plan of action. GWR briefed the leadership on those plans and conducted a series of on-site team-building sessions. The first phase of the team building effort targeted senior leadership. The second phase focused on Division Directors/Deputies, Team Chiefs, and their respective staff. Nineteen team-building sessions were conducted in all. After analyzing all the feedback sessions, GWR provided final lists of actions for each group, and identified key steps to be implemented to improve the workplace environment as a whole.

A subsequent culture & climate survey was recently conducted. Based on these results, the work environment in this particular office has improved substantially. Scores have improved in all areas of focus targeted by Gantz Wiley Research’s process, including Communication (+16 % pts), Supervision (+14 % pts), Organizational Change (+10% pts), Empowerment (+9% pts), Quality Focus (+9% pts), and Management Leadership (+8% pts).
